GREENSBORO, N.C. – Goalie Thomas Deane made 17 saves and Adam Fiore scored five points in Guilford College's 12-6 men's lacrosse win over the visiting State University of New York at Oneonta Saturday. Deane had 12 stops during the second and third quarters, during which time the Quakers (2-0) outscored the Red Dragons, 6-1.
After Oneonta State's Connor Coyle opened the game's scoring 4:40 into the game, Guilford scored 11 of the game's next 12 goals and held an 11-2 lead with 11:14 to play after Fiore scored his lone goal of the game. Guilford's special teams provided two extra-man goals and a man-down goal during the decisive stretch. The Quakers also held the Red Dragons to one extra-man goal in eight attempts.
Fiore's goal and four assists paced a balanced Guilford offense. Dylan Haupt, Daniel Haupt, Chase Clausen and Jace Sowden each scored twice. Junior Nick Huckins led Guilford with 11 ground balls and Connor Manning won 12-of-16 face-offs.
Coyle's three goals paced Oneonta State (0-1). Daniel Stern and Mike Metzger both added a goal and an assist. Kevin Fitzpatrick made 11 saves in goal.
