Guilford Wins Thriller at Hampden-Sydney, 3-2
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Freddy Gomez scored twice and Greg Carnovale once in Guilford College's 3-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win at rainy Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday afternoon.
The victory snapped the Quakers' (6-7-2, 3-5 ODAC) three-game losing skid and enhanced their quest for an ODAC Tournament bid. Hampden-Sydney (8-7, 3-5 ODAC) suffered its second straight setback and its third in five outings.
Gomez' first tally in the sixth minute gave the guests an early lead they carried into intermission. Carnovale struck for his fourth goal of the season in the 62nd minute before Gomez delivered his team-leading 10th marker of the year, one shy of his career high.
The junior's 71st-minute goal proved critical as the Tigers rallied with two late strikes off of corner kicks. Curran Blackwell scored in the 75th and 79th minutes, both on headers off of Nick DeProspero corners.
Guilford had 25 shots to Hampden-Sydney's 24, but the Tigers owned a 15-4 edge in corner kicks. Hampden-Sydney collected four yellow cards and played the game's final eight minutes down a man after Justin Pugh was sent off for his second yellow card.
Hampden-Sydney goalie Duncan Oliphant made seven saves. Guilford's Peter Truitt had one stop.
The Quakers host league-rival Bridgewater College Saturday (10/22) at 7:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
