GREENSBORO, N.C. – Visiting Shenandoah University downed Guilford College, 8-1, in the Hornets' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener Saturday. The teams played at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

With the absence of first-doubles and third-singles specialist Leigh Fishman due to illness, Guilford had to juggle its lineup. The Hornets (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) claimed all three doubles matches, including a tight 8-5 victory by Morgan Fuqua and Melodie Madison over Guilford's Katie Claggett and Nora Prokosch. Alyssa White and Emma Crue posted an 8-2 win over Brooklyn Hopkins and Makayla McLaurin at second doubles. Shenandoah's Denise Vollmer and Audrea Wright topped the Quakers' Alex Giddens and Chandler MacDonald by the same score.

Shenandoah won five of six singles matches, each in straight sets. Fuqua downed Claggett in the first-singles flight, 6-1, 6-4. White downed Prokosch at second singles, 6-4, 6-1. Madison stopped MacDonald, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles. Crue downed McLaurin, 6-1, 7-5, at fourth singles. Wright downed Giddens, 6-2, 6-2.

Guilford picked up its lone victory as Maureen Smith pulled out a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (9-7) win at sixth singles over Denisa Banasova. The win marked the first collegiate singles triumph for Smith, a 47-year-old grandmother recently profiled on WGHP-TV.

Coach Dave McCain's Quakers (1-7, 0-5 ODAC) visit league-rival Roanoke College Sunday (3/19) at 1:00 p.m.
