Stumpo Tallies Six RBI as Quakers Notch Split with Washington and Lee

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College's Mitchell Stumpo tallied six RBI in Saturday afternoon's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader with Washington and Lee University. The Quakers claimed game one, 11-5, while Washington and Lee took the nightcap, 13-4.

The Quakers (18-16, 5-10 ODAC) jumped on the Generals in the second inning of game one as Stumpo collected two RBI on a double to left field with two out. The Quakers had three-straight RBI hits with two outs, which led to four runs in the second.

The Generals (21-9, 12-2 ODAC) broke up John Todd's no-hitter with one out in the top of the fourth frame in a three-run rally buoyed by Anderson Baldy's two-run double.

Stumpo collected his fourth RBI one half-inning later after a Rocco Wilcox single placed runners at the corners with one out. Stumpo's triple to right-center cleared the bases and restored Guilford's lead to four. He sparked a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth after Wilcox's successful sacrifice bunt in front of home plate. Stumpo beat out a ground ball to second base, which plated the first of the two runs. Trevor Denton hit an RBI single in the inning. Wilcox posted an exclamation point on Guilford's two-run seventh frame with a single up the middle.

Guilford pitchers only allowed two walks in the final two innings as the Quakers held on to victory.

Stumpo and Denton also had first-inning RBIs in the nightcap, which enabled the Quakers to answer Washington and Lee's two-run first. Stumpo's groundout scored Josh Shepherd and Denton connected on a sacrifice fly to right.

The Generals scored seven runs in the middle innings, including three in the fifth. Cory Paton's single through a hole with runners in motion scored a pair. Kyle Ruedisili's triple sparked the Generals' four-run eighth.

Stumpo finished five-for-10 on his six-RBI afternoon with a double and a triple, which were Guilford's lone extra-base hits in game one. Denton was also five-for-10 with three RBI, including a four-for-five effort in game one. Wilcox added five hits, four in the opener. Andrew Brann collected four hits on the afternoon, including a three-for-five effort in game two with a double.

Paton led Washington and Lee with four total RBI on three hits. Baldy drove in three runs over the doubleheader.

Todd (5-3) won the opener with five and one-third innings in which he struck out six and walked two. Logan Jones threw the final three and two-third innings for his second save in as many games. He fanned five and walked two. Eric Yost (2-7) took the game-two loss in four and one-third innings.

Reigning ODAC Pitcher of the Week Tom Concklin (6-2) dropped the opener Washington and Lee. He struck out three and walked one in a four-inning start. Danny Devereux (6-1) won the nightcap with five and two-third innings in relief of starter Carson McKoon. Devereux fanned six and walked two.

Guilford returns to action next Saturday (4/23) versus visiting Bridgewater College. The noon ODAC doubleheader marks the Quakers' Senior Day.
