Guilford Picked Sixth in Preseason ODAC Poll

Hampden-Sydney, VA  -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football coaches picked Guilford College sixth in their 2004 preseason football poll announced Friday at the league's annual media day. Three-time defending ODAC champion Bridgewater received five first-place votes and the top spot in the poll. Hampden-Sydney, last year's league runner-up, was picked second.

Guilford head coach Mike Ketchum starts his 14th season at his alma mater with 39 letter winners returning from last year's 2-8 club (1-5 ODAC). Senior punter Christian Adams (St. Cloud, FL/St. Cloud) is Guilford's most accomplished returning student-athlete, after earning Second Team All-America honors in 2003. He led the ODAC in punting in 2002 and 2003, and received Third Team Preseason All-America laurels from Don Hansen's Football Gazette this summer. Senior defensive end Delvin Newkirk (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) and sophomore place-kicker Travis Frazier (Rougemont, NC/Person) also received 2003 All-ODAC recognition. Senior linebacker Wes Kidd (Southport, NC/South Brunswick) was a second-team all-league pick in 2002 who missed most of 2003 with an injury.

The Quakers open their 98th football season September 11 at Methodist at 1:00 p.m. Guilford hosts Greensboro October 2 at 1:00 p.m. in its home opener at the Armfield Athletic Center. The team's preseason workouts begin August 16.
