Quakers Nearly Double Up Royals in Second Half

The Guilford College men's basketball team traveled to Eastern Mennonite for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup with the Royals. The Quakers out scored the Royals by 18 in the second half to win, 79-59.

Coming out of halftime, Guilford (8-3, 4-0) led 37-35 before Liam Ward hit a jumper to kick off a 12-0 run. Eastern Mennonite (5-8, 3-3) hit a three-point shot at the 14:16 mark to end the run but still trailed 49-38.

The 11-point margin was the closest the Royals got to evening the game. The Quakers slowly continued to extend their lead to eventually secure the 20-point victory.

Ward and Tyler Dearman led Guilford as both scored 21 points. Ward added nine rebounds and five steals.

In the first half, it was Eastern Mennonite that jumped out to an early lead. Ward hit a game opening three but then the Royals scored 13-straight to lead by 10 with 15:56 remaining in the first half.

Trailing by 11 (19-8), Dearman has a steal and dunk to jump start a 11-0 run to even the game at 19 at the 9:04 mark. Both teams went back-and-forth until Guilford scored eight of the final 11 points over the final two minutes of the first half. GC led by two (37-35) as the halftime horn sounded.

Jaylen Gore and Jorden Davis joined the scoring affair with 15 and 13 points, respectively. The Quakers grabbed nine more rebounds (38-29) and forced 20 turnovers on the afternoon.

Guilford faces Washington & Lee on the road on Wednesday, January 19. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
