FOREST, VA -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse coaches picked Guilford College sixth in their annual preseason poll released Friday. The Quakers received 37 points in the 10-team rankings. Reigning ODAC champion Hampden-Sydney College earned the top spot with seven first-place votes and 77 overall points. Lynchburg College was second with two first-place votes and 72 overall points.
The Quakers are coming off an 8-8 (3-6 ODAC) season. Guilford returns seven starters among 25 letter winners, including junior Zach Berkowitz, the Quakers' top scorer in 2017. Berkowitz led the team in goals (26) assists (15) for a total of 41 points in 16 appearances last season. Other key veterans include Third Team All-ODAC goalie Parker Styles, a senior and Second Team All-ODAC defenseman Will Forrestal another senior. Styles started all 16 contests last season and made 206 saves, which ranked third among ODAC leaders. His .580 save percentage led the conference, and his 9.54 goals against average stood second. He also added 61 ground balls, which was good for eighth in the conference. Forrestal had 40 ground balls and led the team in caused turnovers (35).
The Quakers play their season opener February 17 on the road against The University of the South (Sewanee) at 2 p.m. They finish the month of February with a matchup at Greensboro College Feb. 21, Guilford's first home game is February 24 versus Sothern Virginia University and finishes the month of February at Methodist University Feb. 28. The Quakers open conference play March 10 at Virginia Wesleyan University and hosts Shenandoah University for its first ODAC home game.
