FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- The Guilford men's tennis team competed at the Methodist University Fall Invitational on October 4-5 and the Quakers had a strong showing. The field of teams included Averett University and Division II programs Barton College and the University of Mount Olive.
In singles action, Mason Robb and Elijah Gregory both earned wins in the consolation finals of their respective flights. Robb defeated Coleman Baker of Methodist, 8-2 in Flight 1 consolation final, while Gregory posted an 8-3 victory over Averett's Nicolas Yanes in Flight 2.
Jay Montague reached the consolation final in Flight 4 but was handed an 8-2 loss by Alfredo Huamani of Barton. In the consolation final of Flight 6, Kai Glass fell to Methodist's Luke Laney by a score of 8-1.
In doubles play, the duos of Drake Schreiber/Joe Horne and Montague/Dominik Pocrnja picked up wins during their opening-round matchups. Horne and Schreiber advanced to the third-place contest in Flight 2 but were defeated 8-6 by AJ Rogers and E.J. Stolmeijer of Methodist. Montague and Pocrnja also fell in their third-place Flight 3 match to Methodist's Joshua Deutsch and Harrison Bitzberger (8-4).
The Quakers are back in action February 20 when they host Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m. at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts.
