Richard Vinson joined Guilford's track and field staff as a throws coach in November 2018. Originally from Cary, North Carolina, he graduated from Panther Creek High School where he lettered in track and field and football.  Vinson ultimately continued his career in track and field and signed with Southeast Missouri State University.

While earning a bachelor of arts degree in family studies, Vinson made a name for himself as a thrower for the Red Hawks. He won the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) javelin title in 2017 and was silver medalist the following year.  As a senior, he qualified for the NCAA Division I West Regional Finals where he placed seventh with a career-long throw of 69.07 meters (226'). Vinson advanced to 2018 national championships where he placed 19th.

Vinson also competed in the long jump at Southeast Missouri State. His best jump was 19’ 3.5” at a dual meet with Southern Indiana University-Edwardsville in 2017.

Vinson earned his Level I coaching certification from USA Track & Field in August 2018.
