GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College athletics department announced the hiring of Sarah Mathews as the 10th Head Women's Basketball Coach. Mathews joins Guilford after spending the last four seasons leading the program at Bridgewater College.
"I would like to thank Director of Athletics, Bill Foti, for the opportunity to lead the storied Women's Basketball program at Guilford College. As soon as I arrived on campus, I immediately felt like it was a match." said Mathews. "I am excited to build relationships with the current roster, alumni, and within the Guilford College community!
Overall, Mathews has compiled a record of 76-67 over the course of her career, 45-27 in her time at Bridgewater.
She has also served in the same capacity for three seasons at NCAA Division III Keuka College, going 31-40. Prior to her stint in Central New York, Mathews served as the assistant at DII Eckerd College and the Director of Basketball Operations at D1 Elon University.
In her final season with the Eagles, one that was cut short due to COVID, Mathew's squad was 4-0. She had two athletes to All-State and All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams.
Throughout her career she has coached one ODAC Defensive Player of the Year, one D3hoops.com All-Region honoree, two First Team Academic All-Americans and nine All-Conference honorees.

She's a proven winner, having established herself as a successful head coach at the Division III level, particularly in the ODAC." said Director of Athletics Bill Foti. "She's consistently demonstrated the ability to recruit quality student-athletes and then mold them into a quality team. Most recently, she has successfully recruited All-ODAC performers and an Academic All-Americans. Her teams have consistently been very high achievers in both the classroom and on the court. I'm confident she'll continue that record of success at Guilford."
"I called Greensboro home for 6 years as a student at UNC-Greensboro, and as a coach at Guilford Tech and Elon University. I adored every second I lived in the area and look forward to sharing my admiration with prospects during the recruiting process." Said Mathews.
Her coaching career kicked off here in Guilford County as she served as the assistant coach at Guilford Technical Community College during the 2010-11 season. With her help, the Titans went 29-3, while winning the Region X Championship.
Mathews transferred to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro after receiving her associate's degree of science from Mohawk Valley Community College. As a student-athlete at MVCC, she was named a 2006 National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) First Team All-American, also garnering an Academic All-American title.
Mathews graduated from UNC-G with a bachelor of science in physical education.
Head Coach Mathews had this to say about joining Guilford College, "Coach Flamini has built a winning tradition here at Guilford, one that I hope to carry on. She was very well-respected in the ODAC and her teams were the epitome of "tough," playing hard every possession. I have always admired her legacy at Guilford, on and off the court."
Sarah and her husband Bryan have a son, Macson.
