RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Guilford College women's volleyball team (2-4) fell to William Peace University (2-1), 3-0 in the opening match of the WIlliam Peace University Quad Match.
Guilford trailed through the opening rallies of set one, but was able to catch up and take over on a pair of service aces and an assist by Maddi Page - the kill credited to Cam Blankenship (12-11). The lead was pushed to two points courtesy of a WPU error, which forced a timeout by the trailing squad. The host scored coming out of the break and were able to put together a four-point run to power their push to the end, claiming a 25-21 victory in set one.
The second set was less eventful than the first, as GC trailed out of the gate. It was a quartet of 3-plus point streaks that brought the set to a close, 25-15.
Set three started with a tight battle, but the Pacers slowly asserted itself, taking over at 5-4. They then posted 6-straight points. The streak came to an end on a pair of errors. However, it was a little too late for the Quakers to tear down the cushion WPU had built. They fell 25-15.
Blankenship led her squad offensively with nine kills, while ranking second in digs with eight. Page helped to fuel the offensive push with 16 assists to go with her two service aces.
Guilford returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as it takes on Christopher Newport University in its second match of the quad. It will close out the weekend with a 3 p.m. matchup with Meredith College.
