Men's Basketball Impresses in Exhibition at D1 UNCW

WILMINGTON N.C.. -- The Guilford College men's basketball team battled close with Division I University of North Carolina - Wilmington in an exhibition match on Friday evening, ultimately falling 77-68.

  • A tight game from the jump, the score was knotted many times in the early goings of the contest but saw the Quakers take over at 12:30 in the first half on a Jaylen Gore layup, 12-10. Gore helped his squad extend its lead to five points on a bucket from beyond the arc.

  • Guilford was able to maintain at least a five-point lead for nearly six minutes of play before the hosts were able to battle back even. 

  • UNCW took control of the scoreboard with 2:35 remaining on the clock, able to carry a 39-35 lead into halftime. 

  • GC was able to gain the lead early in the second frame, helped by a layup by Liam Ward to make it even and a jumper by Gore to go ahead 47-45.

  • Despite good efforts on behalf of the Quakers, the Seahawks were able to fight back and gain the lead. Following the halfway mark GC trailed, eventually falling 77-68.

  • Owning the last bucket of the game was Tyler Dearman with a three as :25 remained on the clock.



  • Guilford out-rebounded its D1 opponent 40-38. 

  • GC was 80% from the charity stripe (8-for-10), while UNCW shot 72.2& (13-for-18).

  • It was also better from behind the arc, shooting 50% for three (8-for-16) while the hosts shot 35.7% (10-for-28).



  • Recording his first-career double-double, Julius Burch went up for a team-high 12 rebounds, while posting a second-best 14 points. He also added one steal and one assist to his credit.

  • Leading the squad in scoring for the second-consecutive night was Liam Ward with his impressive 23 points. Ward also contributed on defense with four rebounds.

  • Two assists shy of a double-double, senior Jaylen Gore put up eight helpers and 10 points. Gore recorded two steals and three rebounds.

  • Second-best off the boards, Joah Logan grabbed eight rebounds, one offensive and seven defensive. Logan also had three points and one block.

  • Also strong for the Quakers, Tyler Dearman put up nine points, four rebounds, two steals and one block.



Guilford will make its first appearance of the season in Greensboro, but will still be a visitor, as it travels to crosstown rival Greensboro College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
